But what is it? Bizarre home feature stumps would-be tenants

Is it a lounge shower? An oversized display case? A permanent spray tan booth? This mystery glass box in a Townsville rental has would-be tenants scratching their heads.

The home at 72 Colchester Cres, Kirwan, hit the rental market on July 26 with a $480 per week price tag, and an impossible-to-miss rectangular prism in the lounge.

Sitting on a tiled base, the thing looks like a glass shower cubicle encasing a small footprint from floor to ceiling.

The property is for lease through McGrath Estate Agents Townsville but there is no mention of the ‘feature’ in the online listing.

Agency principal, Kaye Matheson said the home was “pretty run of the mill”.

“It’s the standard kind of property people in Townsville want,” she said.

“It’s a four-bedrooms, two-bathroom home with double carport on a big corner block.”

But what about the lounge room cubicle?

Is it an in-built naughty “corner”? A tiny charcuterie room for curing salami? A space for in-home performance art?

“It does confuse people,” Ms Matheson said.

“It’s the only one of its kind I’ve had in 30 years of working in real estate.

“People ring up about the property and say ‘can I ask just one question’.

“And we know immediately what the question will be.”

Ms Matheson said most people initially thought the thing was some sort of shower while others simply couldn’t wrap their minds around what they were looking at.

So what is it?

“It’s a little green house and it’s got a skylight above it,” Ms Matheson said.

“When you walk into the front door, it’s right there in front of you.”

The veteran real estate agent said the most recent tenant didn’t use the space but it had potential to be a lush, tropical oasis in the otherwise standard home.

It just needs the right green thumb to come along.

With PropTrack data showing the rental vacancy rate in Townsville was sitting at 1.09 per cent and the median rent at $420 per week, it’s likely the property will be snapped up quickly whether potential tenants find the indoor greenhouse an asset or not.
